One of those "I wish I'd thought of that" ideas

I always really admire people who are fearless, especially on the Internet. Check out the blog of one Sean Aiken, who is doing a new job every week and donating his wages to charity. So far he's done all kinds of cool stuff: baker, fashion buyer, photographer, aquarium "host" (?)...and these are just the recent ones. He's somewhere in the Week #30-ish range--head to his website to check out the latest, read the blogs, watch the videos...even offer him a job as your personal masseuse? Chauffeur? Cook? The possibilities are endless.

Oh, and also, I'm a celebrity on the internets! Just kidding, but my profile is up on the website, so take a look.

Fairly odd tales

J.K. Rowling hand-wrote and illustrated The Tales of Beedle the Bard, that book Dumbledore gives Hermione in Deathly Hallows which...I don't actually remember what it does for them, actually. They've printed only seven copies (IN THE WHOLE WORLD! I KNOW!), six of which went to people closely related with the franchise (I'm thinking Rowling's agent, her American publisher Arthur Levine, her British publisher, her...kids? I'm tapped), and one of which they're auctioning off for charity. [Guardian]

Don't be "So Jealous"

I love New York. Last night, completely unplanned, I went to a concert. The main performers were Tegan and Sara, who I of course know of and whose music I thought I was familiar with, but it turns out--I wasn't! I know about four songs, almost all of which got played ("Superstar", from one of their earlier albums, wasn't; oh, and I don't think they played "I Know I Know I Know", either, which seems weird to me because that song was on Grey's Anatomy, if not more shows, so...maybe I missed it? I don't know). Anyway, contrary to my friend Katie's very nature, we got to the venue (Webster Hall) in time to wait in the long-ass line that wrapped itself around two blocks. Randoms kept coming up to us and asking, "What's this line for?", like they thought we might say, "Free iPods--join in on the fun, the more the merrier!" or something. We got inside early enough to peruse the merch table (Katie bought a t-shirt; I bought a set of three Tegan and Sara buttons, one of which is for Cambria) and get a pretty good position about ten feet from the stage.

At just after 9:00, the opening band (Northern State) came on. I'd never heard of them, and according to Katie her friend Pat said, "You'll either hate them, or sort of like them." So obviously we had high hopes. But I thought they were really super fun! They were basically the female version of a poor man's Beastie Boys, which is not to say they weren't energetic and funny and fairly fantastic. I mean, come on: three white Long Island girls in their mid- to late-twenties rapping and jumping around like three-year-olds high on birthday cake? Bound to be entertaining. The rapping was quite ridiculous--I mean, they aren't LFO or anything, rapping about "ruby red slippers and a bunch of trees", but their songs are sort of silly. Yet, they played two songs that were featured on Grey's Anatomy ("Better Already" and "iluvitwhenya") that were actually quite good, and I'm also partial to "Away Away" as well. That said, however, they were far better live than they are on their CD, because I downloaded the music this morning and was much less enthused by the energy they brought. Still, probably the best opening act I'd ever seen, because they were highly entertaining and their songs were fun, and that's basically all I ask for in an opening act. Also, they had t-shirts that I thought were pretty awesome: see right. I totally want one and might actually order it online.

Katie is just so into Tegan and Sara; it's so much fun to see a band you like with someone who's SO INTO THEM, and I'm so glad she brought me. Tegan and Sara are a great act live. I mean, first of all, their music is fantastic, and their voices are so uniquely melodic that they can kind of lull you into a particular deep state of consciousness...or some crap like that. They also tell funny stories on stage throughout the set, which is apparently a throwback to when they didn't have enough material for a full show but wanted to give the crowd one anyway. They also do this adorable thing where they say "Thank you", very sweetly, after the applause after each song. But they don't take no shit--Tegan good-naturedly gave this heckler in the back a tongue-lashing when he kept saying obnoxious things between songs. I hate hecklers; why they come is totally beyond me. Don't you have something better to do with $25? Also a great thing about Tegan and Sara is that if you get bored (which is difficult, but not impossible, especially when you don't know all the songs) you can always occupy yourself with trying to figure out which one is which. Apparently they're identical, technically, but they do look different, so while differentiating them is not hard--like, if they switched sides of the stage between songs, you would notice--if you don't know which is which to start off with, you can spend hours trying to decide. I was wrong with my guesses, but whatever; I still enjoyed the show very much.

At the end of the show they did this thing where they announced the last song, then admitted they'd be back for an encore, and asked us not to clap after the last song or before the encore, but just be absolutely silent and then when they came back out for the encore we would be super loud. Well, of course some drunk assholes forgot, and some purposefully tried to ruin it, but for the most part people were pretty quiet and when they came back on stage it was really loud. Good times.

God, it was so packed. There were times when people were jumping up and down so much I really thought the floor was going to cave in to the basement below; I could feel the hardwood floor bending under the weight. For the most part the other people in the crowd were cool, but every once and a while you'd get some really obnoxious girls who would push forward and stand in front of me, like they had every right to be there, and then they would kind of lean back so that not only were their heads in my way, but they were also sort of pushing me backwards. One couple in particular I wanted to just smack; this blond girl and her girlfriend, I think, who was really skinny and had a strange Joey Lawrence (WHOA!) haircut and smelled terribly like B.O., pushed in front of me and then the smelly girlfriend was all bopping around to the music and kept hitting me with her elbows. I kept exchanging "WTF?" glances with this girl standing next to them, who was very sympathetic, and with Katie. It really ruined a bit of my Northern State experience, but eventually they left and never came back. (I didn't mean for that to sound so sinister; I never saw them again, but I'm sure they were still there somewhere.)

Katie wrote down all the songs they played throughout the entire concert, which I didn't really understand, but I asked her to send it to me so if she is eventually able to decipher her own handwriting I'll add it to this post. They played "Walking With a Ghost" during the encore, though, that I know. I'm rambling and digressing because I can't think of a good way to end this post, so maybe I'll just say TEGAN AND SARA RAWK! and leave it at that.

ETA: Oh my God, I totally forgot--pretty much the funniest part of the concert was when they started playing this song that you could tell everybody recognized but nobody could really place it. Finally, I shouted to Katie, "It's 'Umbrella'!" What is it with artists and "Umbrella"? Rhianna did it, it was a hit, fine (I totally loved it, I'm not going to lie; still do, in fact). Then that chick whose name I don't know (maybe she was French? Or had a French name?) covered it, but made it really slow. And then Mandy Moore covered that slow cover! And now Tegan and Sara are playing it at their concert (BTW, it was the best version I'd heard, better than the original even, which is so catchy)...I just don't get it. Is it like some big music industry in-joke, that everybody's going to keep covering "Umbrella" because it's funny? I'm confused, but amused. (God, maybe that should be the new title of my personal blog.)

ETA some more: Katie emailed me the set list from the concert (which, curiously, I don't think has a name--"The Con", I guess). She doesn't think she got it all right, but it's probably pretty close.
1. Dark Come Soon (The Con)
2. Like O, Like H (The Con)
3. Nineteen (The Con)
4. Hop A Plane (The Con)
5. Speak Slow (So Jealous)
6. So Jealous (So Jealous)
7. "Your House" (she can't remember)
8, Where Does the Good Go (So Jealous)
9. Soil, Soil (The Con)
10. "Don't Need You" (again, can't remember)
11. Relief Next to Me (The Con)
12. Are You 10 Years Ago (The Con)
13. Back In Your Head (The Con)
14. The Con (The Con)
15. Call It Off (The Con)

Encore

1. You Wouldn't Like Me (So Jealous)
2. Take Me Anywhere (So Jealous)
3. Umbrella
4. Walking With a Ghost (So Jealous)
5. Living Room (If It Was You)

I'm so excited! (doo doo)

And I just can't hide it! (doo doo)

I will be in NYC in just two days!

YIPPEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Neverending Story

So here's to the neverending saga and drama that this is my life and my relationships...which I am sure you are all tired of hearing by now.

So because I like to brutally (and voluntarily) punish myself, I checked asshole's myspace. Little did I know, I would find a conversation between him and his ex in which he commented "i let her do it. lol i knew it would make her feel better that way" and she responded "she is a stupid biatch :-)." Yep, for all the world to see...a nice little conversation about how stupid I am. Needless to say, for the first time in my life I feel like I stood up for myself and what I deserved, broke it off and felt no bitterness or animosity - and he took the wind right out of my sails. So instead of feeling like I did the right thing and can move on, I now feel as though I WAS the one that was dumped. How did this happen?!

All this leaves me wondering when I will finally stop getting my heart broke and find someone who will love me endlessly. Even from Texas, 1500 miles away Ian has managed to hurt me again and I am wondering how and why it turned from constant declarations of love ...to this.

So he has certainely been deleted and blocked from every aspect of my life (my cell phone, my myspace...everything)...and I was so hoping we could be mature enough that I wouldn't have to do that. Well turns out HE CAN'T.

Bummer.

Garth

So I went to see Garth Brooks last night. Well not in person, he was performing in Kansas City, MO and they were Broadcasting it LIVE at half a dozen theatres in the Houston area. Awesome. Renewed my love for classic Garth tunes like "The River", "The Dance", "Beaches of Cheyenne"....and many many more. I hope he decides to go on tour and stop this way, I am so there in a heartbeat. Still, awkward to attend a "concert" in a theatre when everyone is sitting down and not dancing. Oh well...still fun.

Seriously anxious to get to San Diego. I'll be there at 10:20pm on Monday. Mike and I have been talking about where to eat for Thanksgiving - he wants to get dressed up and go out like "fancy, rich people". LOL So..... I have to dig up a nice dress or buy one. He's promised to take me to Bronx, Gaglione's, and out for California burrittos...oh and he owes me a 150am shot of Patron at Longboard's (he chickened out on me!). Aside from being in NY with you guy, there is no where else I would rather be next week. Oh gees, 5 straight days with an aggressive, loud New Yorker....hahahha BRING IT.

I'm actually doing good these days, though today I admit...I am feeling lonely and missing (parts) of my relationship. C'es La Vie I guess.

That's it for now. :-)

Viva Las Vegas

First off, congratulations Anna on archiving your dream of moving to New York and getting a job! I knew you would succeed because you are such a committed person to your passion. I hope this new chapter of your life is everything you want. Hopefully I will get a chance to see you when I'm on the East coast in Dec. (the 22nd to Jan. 3rd) and we can celebrate!

This past weekend I went to Vegas with my girls from college. We had a lot of fun going out to the clubs (Pure, Tangerine, Tryst) and sleeping in way late! I missed the 4S girls when we walked past the Flamingo (where we stayed at when Cambria, Anna, Kim and I went last year in June.) I still have that super awesome tacky Vegas shirt! I was heart broken to learn that Celine Dion is leaving Vegas after February. I must see her show and that ground breaking chest thump of hers. I'm on a mission!

Speaking of missions, looking forward to going to Vancouver in 2010 for men's/women's curling! The dates have been posted (Feb. 12-28 2010) and I'm on the mailing list for event updates. Yeah!

As for today, things are going well. My family and Ted are coming to Long Beach for Thanksgiving. I've never prepared a Thanksgiving dinner before, so this should be interesting. I've already made a shopping list where half of the ingredients I've never bought before. At least my mom will be here to help me out!

How disgusting is Tila Tequila for making her love interests eat cow penis and balls?! Watching 'A Shot at Love' while blogging and the competition she has them going through is crazy! What a guilty pleasure that show is.

And can't wait for 'Project Runway', make it work!

ANDRAY!

Hey ya! There are going to be two Chicagoans on Project Runway this season! That Victorya girl went to University of Chicago undergrad and Parsons for post-grad, which kind of makes her an amalgam of me and Cambria. I'm so excited for the premier, it's sort of not funny. Hey, something's got to get me through this WGA strike.

AlternaTV

Okay, so we all know the Writer's Guild of America is striking (for a view from the front lines, go here), which means that after the networks air all the episodes of their shows that are either already in the can, currently being produced, or have scripts finished, that's it. Dunzo. End of TV season. The ish is over DVD and online residuals (as of now, TV writers get $0.04 per DVD sale--they want it bumped to $0.08--and nothing from online streaming, which networks collect advertising dollars for; not fair, basically), plus pensions and other crap I don't understand, and the experts are declaring it a short TV season. For more details on when your faves go dark, check out Mike Ausiello's post on TVGuide.com.

Meanwhile, perhaps you should look into alternatives, like Clark and Michael, which I pimped last week, or my new discovery, quarterlife, which is online-only, streaming on MySpace. And, coincidentally, it also stars an actor from ABC Family's "Greek"! This time, Rob Thomas lookalike Cappie! Who, let's face it, is hot. quarterlife refers to a video blog kept by one Dylan Krieger, an editorial associate (or associate editor--they're really not very clear on this) at a Seventeen-like mag in (I guess) LA. Kind of like Lonelygirl15 (actually, the girl who plays Dylan was on "Lonelygirl15") but...older? I think these people are supposed to be our age. I think it's pretty entertaining, but that's because I'm an easy sell. Laters!

Fool me one shame on you, Fool me twice shame on me

Yep, again. The break up is not official yet but it will happen...because I will do it. I am laying low for now and not calling....but I will do it as soon as he calls.

Long story short... he wants to "explore other things"... go figure what that means. Pretty confusing when that sentence is followed with "i do love you though." Whatever I am done with boys. He wouldn't even MAN UP and make a decision...so my hand is being forced.

So I am still going to SD, but will spend my time with Carolyn and Mike...mostly Mike because I need him dearly.

Wish you were here.

Make it work

I would just like to remind everyone that Project Runway returns this Wednesday!!

It is so nice of Cambria to allow Tim Gunn to leave his hiding place under her bed to record a television show!

Good for you Glenn Coco! :)

Impatient

I am so ANXIOUS to be in San Diego, it's ridiculous. I will be flying in on 11/19 @ 10:20pm and flying out 11/24 @ 5pm. I'm staying with my friend Carolyn on the 19th, hanging out with Mike the next day and meeting up with Ian in the afternoon. Ian's Mom is coming down to pick us up and drive us back to Palm Desert to spend Thanksgiving there. I am totally looking forward to it, in fact, sometimes it's all I can think of; am I crazy?

Anywho, yay ANNA for her job and finding an apartment - I KNEW persistence would pay off. Can't wait to hear about all the exciting things that happen to you girls in NYC over Thanksgiving. Take many pictures and think of me!

Love you all!

OMG...I'm seriously drunk on Wednesday?

Congrats to Anna for finding a place to live! I'm so proud! And I am soooooo ridiculously excited to come to New York in 13 days! AH! We're going to have a blast!

P to the S: It's 10pm on a Wednesday and I'm drunk. Yay drunk blogging! Dani is walking the 3day breast cancer walk this weekend and she had a fundraiser tonight at Hooters. And in order to trule appreciate their crappy food I had to drink a lot. I think I drank an entire pitcher of Stella by myself. Oops. I sure that this doesn't haunt me in the morning when I have to be at work...

Anna- I love your new fake boyfriend. I knew exactly who he was because of his relationship with Clark Duke (aka the guy from Greek- which btw I'm sad the season is over). But also because he is also one of the guys from Superbad. I never actually saw the movie but I recognized him right away. :)

OMG I have seen some of the most hideous outfits recently, which I will post about on my own blog. I haven't posted on there in quite a while, but I decided today that I would post regularly all of my bitchy comments about how the students at SDSU dress, etc. Check it out!

I'm out.

New fake boyfriend alert!

Guys. I have a new fake boyfriend. His name is...hold on, let me check how old he is...okay, nineteen, not illegal. Anyway! His name is Michael Cera. You might know him from his work on Arrested Development, on which he played the hilariously awkward George Michael Bluth.

Needless to say, Cambria's roommate, Jessica, and her boyfriend, Shaun, are either fake creeped out or really creeped out by Cambria's insistence that I like the young ones. And while it's true I'm not hot for the ridiculously old frauds like Rob Lowe, I would not actually date somebody younger than me, if only because they'd be really immature. I mean, men mature at vastly a different (and slower) rate than girls, so dating a nineteen-year-old boy (there's really no other word for them) would be like dating an, um, fourteen-year-old boy? I don't know. I can't do math well.

Anyways, in lieu of that, I'm going to pimp wicked MC's blog and Internet video series, Clark and Michael, which he cowrites, produces, directs, what have you, with his BFF Clark Duke, who virtually no one but Kim will recognize from the ABC Family original series "Greek." It's funny to me, at least! So watch it or don't watch it or whatever, but now you know it's there!

P.S. I've moved to New York and found an apartment. Details to come.
